Colors that are too bright or harsh are hard to look at online and could potentially drive away customers. Bright yellows and "neon" shades come across as very "loud" on a monitor and viewers can feel "blinded" by the brightness of these types of colors.
Choose colors that blend well and are pleasing to look at together. Colors in the same family usually blend well together and are easy on the eyes. If you are using stock photos, choose ones that match the tones in the overall color scheme of your site for a uniform and polished look.

Small Changes Make a Big Impact
If your site isn't all that you want it to be, but you don't have the budget to have it redone, consider making some small changes, like the ones listed below, to create a big impact on the look of your site.
Streamline your fonts:
If your site uses a variety of fonts, pick one, and use that consistently throughout the site. Same thing goes for font size. Make all page headers the same size and type of font and ditto for page text. Make links that are near each other consistent in size and color.
Pare down the font effects:
Use special font styles like all caps, bolded/underlined words sparingly. When every sentence screams for attention, none of them seem important. Also limit the use of exclamation points.
Format images:
Make images the same or similar size and format, especially if you have several images like thumbnails all one page together. Due to size and image orientation, it may not be possible for all images to be exactly the same dimensions, but size them proportionately to one another and format them similarly; either put borders on all the images, or on none.
Remember, small changes can go a long way to creating a cleaner, crisper, more professional look for your site.

Testing Links & Forms
Your web site has been up and running for some time now. Everything works as it should, right? It's important to periodically check that all the links on your site (especially ones that go to external sites) don't go to dead pages, and that any forms on your site still function properly.
Links:
If you have links to other sites - those sites may have been updated, may have a new web address, or may no longer exist, so you need to check them to make sure links from your site are current and go to the correct pages.
Online Forms:
Hosting firms may change their policies on what type of scripting is supported for online "contact us" forms, so it's crucial to do a test submission of your form once in a while to make sure that your contact form still works.
